In Cotton Mather's Diary, we are told of a relationship that's being built between Mather's and another women, and how he feels it is wrong because of his Religion. His religion is very important to him, and also the time period (duh), and takes it as far as to blame Satan for the temptations he is presented with. However, it can be inferred that Mather's reputation is more important to him than his reputation with God. A question brought up by his diaries, is what is wrong with the woman he is seeing? And why can't they be public with their relationship, or even have one. He calls her a gentlewoman, but describes her so thoroughly through his entries. In the end of the excerpt, he meets a new woman, who seems to be fit with him, so if this is true, why would the first woman not be okay?

Tolumin Thesis: Because (data), Therefore (claim), since (warrant). All bad texts are not interesting, therefore all good writing has an interesting topic, since good writing is interesting. In the Wake County Public School System, each student in each grade is required to pass one English class per year, to advance onto the next grade. This requires students to obtain a certain learning process that helps the mind analyze text, and situations differently. It is a requirement to read a set list of books before the course ends, to be successful in the English class, including essays that correlate with the book being discussed, and or read. Sometimes, a student may like the topic, and do very well on the assignment, but others may not, due to lack of interest, or identification with the subject. When this occurs, a students grade may suffer, leaving the student with the responsibility to bring it back up. But is it really the student's fault? Although it is a requirement for the students to read each book, and perhaps write an essay discussing a topic from the book, or the book itself, maybe a student finds it uninteresting, or irrelevant to the topic being taught. This may discourage the student, and cause them to not work as hard. However, if you give a student a topic he or she may like, the student will most likely do very well, causing their grade to improve. In an article, Kurt Vonnegut argues that a writer should find a subject he or she cares about, no matter the reason for writing, or the inspiration. It is also stated that the topic the writer writes about, may be something that they feel others should care about too. Which means it is entirely based on the perspective, of who is the audience, and who is the author. Perhaps a teacher may think Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath is a good book, and this teachers students should write an essay to identify with the book, to become more interested in it. Some students may like the book, but others may not, leaving the teacher interested, and some students uninterested. So why find a topic you care about, if you feel others may be bored with it, or uninterested? If one is to look at finding something they care about, they may try to interest others. But the fact is, not everyone can like the same thing. After all, if everyone liked the same things, we wouldn't have independence, and wouldn't be unique in any sort of way. What one person is interested in, does not make a piece of writing good. Just because One person is interested in something, does not mean another person is interested in the same thing. So, an interesting topic is unnecessary because what makes a good piece of writing, is technique, writing style, and the opinion of the person reading it, not the author's interests. |
